Importance of Math and Science in Education

There is a clear need for students to achieve in both math and science in order to succeed in today’s careers. In an education brief authored by Peterson, Lang, and Billups (1999), the authors reiterated that math and science are prerequisites for success in many of today's occupations.

In 2006 concern was expressed about the declining state of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.  The STEM education coalition was established in part to improve science and math education in grades K-12, to increase college graduation rates in these fields, and to promote graduates who are well trained and able to compete in the workforce.

While increasing math and science education is important for all young adults, not every student  is college bound. In an effort to provide mathematics education to those who are more likely to pursue vocational, or technical, training after high school, EdITS offers the Applied Vocational Math Series.

The Applied Vocational Math Series addresses the fundamentals found in basic math texts for the sixth through tenth grades. Each book presents problems in terms of a particular occupation.

For example, in Mathematics Through Retail Sales, there are sections on topics such as calculating earned wages and sales tax.

In Math Through Construction, several tasks are explored, such as floor and wall framing, roof sheathing and shingles, and finished flooring.

The series also includes Mathematics Through Home Management, Auto Mechanics, and Sports.

Each book in the series contains the same basic math practice problems along with explanations and word problems specific to each occupational area covered in the book.

Each book in the series covers:

Whole Numbers
Geometric Figures
Decimals
Percentages
Ratios and Equations Fractions
Graphs
Measurements

imp_stepsAnother easy-to-use resource for students who need to improve their basic math skills is the Individual Mathematics Program (IMP). The IMP Kit is a self-contained instructional system for grades kindergarten through high school designed to pinpoint areas in which students need to improve and to provide effective instruction. The IMP allows teachers to help their students learn at their own pace.

The advantage of the IMP is that there is a prediagnostic test that guides students to specific math lessons called MATH PAKS. Once the student starts the lessons, which are self-paced, they can take another more in-depth pre-test, complete the lessons and then take a post-test.

This chart gives a more complete description of the program and how it  can be implemented.
