Using the Study Attitudes and Methods Survey Results in the Classroom: Sample ActivityThe Study Attitudes and Methods Survey (SAMS) may be helpful in identifying and selecting students with higher levels of academic interest and study methods who may benefit from special programs. The SAMS might also be of help identifying students that need to improve their study skills to help raise their grade point averages. A series of lesson plans such as this are available in the COPSystem Comprehensive Career Guidebook and Leader's Guide. These activities are integrated into a 6-8 week course that includes the COPSystem Career Guidance assessments with the SAMS. |
Activity Overview: |
In this lesson, students are instructed to evaluate their scores on the SAMS Academic Drive-Conformity scale. The goal of this activity is to increase their self-awareness by helping them learn how motivation and attitude may help or hinder academic success. |
Introduction: |
The Academic Drive-Conformity scale measures a student's level of extrinsic motivation, such that higher levels indicate a tendency for an individual to engage in behaviors that they think will enhance their status and prestige in academically oriented activities. |
Activity 10:1: Academic Drive-Conformity |
Please instruct students to review the scale interpretation in their Guidebooks. They will need to look at their SAMS profile, to determine whether they scored above average, average, or below average compared to their peers. The activities in this lesson will be particularly helpful for students who scored below average on this scale; however, all students should benefit from reviewing their scores. |

1. Designate a specific time each afternoon or evening for studying. |
4. List the name and phone number of a student in each class who can help with current assignments. |
2. Make a notebook for class assignments and make an entry each day just before their designated period of study, to include specifically what is to be accomplished during that time. |
5. Make a list of the study skills which have been the most helpful to their achievement. |
3. List each class they are taking with current assignments. |
6. Have students who do not complete these activities in class complete them for homework before Lesson 11. |
