The State Trait-Depression Adjective Check List (ST-DACL) Scales

State Mood

Total Scale

This summary score represents overall State depressed mood and feelings. It represents the total number of adjectives, both positive and negative valence, endorsed by the respondent in the criterion (i.e., depressed) direction according to how the respondent feels right now. These two components of State depressed mood are measured by two subscales.

Negative
This subscale represents the degree of State negative mood and is referred to as State-Negative Mood (S-Neg). The S-Neg subscale raw score is calculated by summing the negative valence adjectives that were endorsed according to State instructions.

Positive
This subscale represents the degree of State positive or elevated mood and is referred to as State-Positive Mood (S-Pos). The S-Pos subscale raw score is calculated by summing the positive valence adjectives that were endorsed according to State instructions.
